Rumor: Nokia N9 first smartphone to run MeeGo OS?

Friday January 21, 2011

Nokia's N8 smartphone may soon be outdated by a better model operating the MeeGo operating system, thought to be called the Nokia N9.

According to technology, the Nokia N9 will be powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom CPU, have a high quality 12-megapixel camera, and a 4in OLED capacitive touchscreen. No further specifications were exposed, though it is believed that the N9 will be launched at the Mobile World Congress in next month.

MeeGo is an open source, Linux-based operating system which brings together the Moblin project, headed up by Intel, and Maemo, by Nokia, into a single OS that can run on smartphones, notebooks and other devices.

While the N9 rumors remain unsubstantiated by both Nokia and Intel, suggesting they may have access to Nokia insiders.

The N9 would be a welcome boost for Nokia, which has fight back to generate a high-end smartphone to rival Apple's iPhone 4 and handsets that run Google's Android platform.
